LBXIII: Moosecrew are Champions!

Our thirteenth season ends with the Manitoba Moosecrew crowned champions over the Deputy Van Halens. It was the Moosecrew's third playoff appearance (in 2016 and 2020 they finished with Bronze medals) and they delivered after following a dominating 11-2 season. This was no upstart winner, the Crew were the best team in 2021 by every metric, and will hoist the Silver Chalice as soon as we fish it out of the Jersey Swamps.

The final might have been a big what-if for the Crew, who left big scoring running backs on the bench- BUT. They won anyway! Ja'Marr Chase and Cooper Kupp made their regular contributions for the champs while Najee Harris and Ronald Jones did just fine. Game balls to the defense, who came up big in this one with linebacker TJ Edwards leading the swarm. Deputy got a incredible performance from QB Dak Prescott and on the other side of the ball Jordyn Brooks did his part, but it was too little, too late in a silver medal bridesmaid run.
  • OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE GAME: QB DAK PRESCOTT (DVH) 31.50pts
  • DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE GAME: LB TJ EDWARDS (MMC) 17.00pts

The final 2021 bracket looks like this:

LBXIII: ENDZONE

It all comes down to Christian Wilkins.

The defensive lineman (who moonlights at fullback) needs only to score three points to tilt the scales over to the Moosecrew; more than that could put the game beyond stat corrections, while anything around the number might result in a few days of review before the score is finalized.

LBXIII: Two Minute Warning

The Thirteenth Annual Larkspur Bowl arrived with less pomp and circumstance than usual, but it has been a dogfight so far- the heavily favored Manitoba Moosecrew rumbled out to a big lead, but, unable to put the Deputy Van Halens away, they have allowed Dak Prescott the opportunity to come from behind, even the score, and potentially clinch the victory.

There's still another half to play with Dak and Greg the Leg capable of putting this one out of reach. However, with some turnovers and missed kicks, these are two positions that could lose points in a hurry if the tide turns in the endgame.

Whatever happens, Manitoba will have final rebuttal in the form of defensive lineman Christian Wilkins, who score a robust 18.40 last week. He'll likely need a game changing performance to give the Moosecrew glory. If he falls short, the story will likely be the Manitoba backfield, where the team had FIVE running backs score over 15 points this week, but unfortunately, played their fourth and fifth highest scorers. 30.9 points from Justin Jackson, 29.5 from Damien Harris, and 21.4 from Rashaad Penny, all wasted on the sidelines. Any one of them playing over Najee Harris or Ronald Jones might have put the title out of reach, but c'set la vie! SO IT GOES.

XIII: Semifinal Results

In year thirteen, the Larkspur Bowl will see a ninth team hoist the vaunted Silver Chalice:
Either the top seeded Manitoba Moosecrew or the surging #2 seed the Van Halens of Deputy.

There will be a LBXIII Preview prior to kickoff, but lets take a quick look at our semifinal matchups, in which both of the home teams trounced their competitor with minimal resistance.

DEPUTY LOCKS UP COWS, ADVANCE TO BOWL GAME

The Van Halens were more competent than overpowering in this one, but with Tom Brady unable to ignite a flaccid South Park offense, it was more than enough. Deputy's offense had some unlikely contributions: Donta Foreman and Craig Reynolds were not the plan, but here we are! Likewise, Gabriel Davis being the OPOY was unexpected, but well deserved. The Van Halen defense did not do much in this one, nor did they need to- Jordyn Brooks played janitor and cleaned up on the backend. The South Park defense, led by Darius Leonard, menaced at a playoff caliber, but Keenan Allen and Darnell Mooney were the only offensive players worth mentioning in the dispiriting defeat.

  • OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE GAME: WR GABRIEL DAVIS (DVH) 24.2
  • DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE GAME: LB DARIUS LEONARD (SPC) 27.85

MOOSECREW END TOMMY BOY'S STREAK, UNTO FINALS

Manitoba avenges their week 12 loss to the Tommy Boys, who see their eight week win streak end ingloriously in the semifinal. Manitoba's offense got major plays from Cooper Kupp and Tyreek Hill, while a linebacking corps headed by Lavonte David took care of business on the midway and Minkah Fitzpatrick locked down the backend. Tyler Boyd supplied the only highlight for Ohio, who will battle South Park for the bronze medal next week while the Moose arrive at the end goal.

  • OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE GAME: WR COOPER KUPP (MMC) 34.8
  • DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE GAME: LB LAVONTE DAVID (MMC) 28.5

We have a host of teams to eulogize in the near future as well:

  • 5TH PLACE: PHILADELPHIA RUM HAM (9-4)
  • 6TH PLACE: MAR-A-LAGO TREASON (9-4)
  • 11TH PLACE: NEW JERSEY SANITATION CREW (4-9)
  • 12TH PLACE: PHOENIX UPRISING (6-7)

XIII: First Round Results

THE FIRST ROUND  IS IN THE BOOKS AND WE HAVE OUR SEMIFINALISTS IN BOTH BRACKETS:

OHIO REMAINS EN FUEGO, ENDS THREAT OF TREASON

The Tommy Boys leaned on their playmakers obvious (George Kittle, Alvin Kamara) and less obvious (Hunter Renfrow, Van Jefferson) to keep their winning streak going. Mar-A-Lago's resurgent season ends with a very admirable effort, but the stars just did not align, as Russell Wilson and Leonard Fournette come up short.

  • OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE GAME: TE GEORGE KITTLE (OTB) 32.00
  • DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE GAME: CB RASUL DOUGLAS (MAL) 24.75

SOUTH PARK DOES ENOUGH TO SLIP PAST PHILLY

It didn't have the fireworks that the other side of the bracket supplied, but it does have a semifinalist- Tom Brady and the Cows advance by virtue of doing just enough. Either team would have lost to the Treason if the brackets had gone differently, but that's called fate. For South Philly, injuries to Terry McLaurin and DeAndre Hopkins were demoralizing in a winnable game.

  • OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE GAME: QB TOM BRADY (SPC) 32.62
  • DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE GAME: CB AJ TERRELL (PRH) 18.00

XIII: The Brackets Are Set

The Thirteenth Annual Larkspur Bowl is set! Featuring only one previous winner (LBVII, South Park) it is a wide open field that is dealing with some new caveats- notably, the week 14 NFL bye putting holes in a couple of lineups and making the top two seeds even more valuable than before.

We will take some time to preview matchups before kickoff on Thursdays, but here's the dance!

XIII: Pawnee Pride

It all came crashing down hard in Pawnee, where wins were few and far between. The team's carousel at running back and instability at quarterback ultimately proved to be their undoing, as they faced the league's highest point total. Where in the past the Pride have been able to reach deep and pull off a blockbuster, this year's deals, though well executed, proved wholly inadequate: Deebo proved the prize instead of Saquon in their first deal- a coup, considering Michael Thomas was ultimately a black hole. With Chris Carson unreliable due to a litany of ailments (and with Saquon on the shelf) Devontae Booker was a worthwhile add, and the team's final deal was a rare IDP add- and it worked out too. Alas, none of this was enough, as the team's wideouts were constantly hurt (AJ Green, Kenny Golladay, Tyrell Williams, Henry Ruggs, and the aforementioned Thomas, plus the traded Kadarius Toney) all missed time. The losing obfuscates a pair of linebackers that stood out in the rookie Parson and the veteran Campbell, both top ten at their position.

XIII: Carmel Rudy-Tuesdays

It was a season to forget in Carmel, where the team lost nine games in a row before reaching the salvation of the season's end. Their two wins both came over teams bound for the playoffs, and they gave a third contender (Deputy) a run for their money in week four, but that is the end of the positives that can be said here. Their three deals were all shrewd, despite ultimately proving futile- acquiring DeVante Parker for a free agent Running Back, moving Parker for that Running Back's replacement, and then acquiring an elite Tight End in Travis Kelce were not the reason for the losses. Instead the team should look at their defense for answers- continually swapping players out and rarely finding a high-end solution.

XIII: Week Thirteen Results

The 2021 Regular Season has concluded- eight teams have seen their best laid plans go awry over the course of three months, while six teams remain in contention for the Silver Chalice.

Lets take a closer look at the teams that made the playoffs- how they got there, and how they might fare in the season's final month.

1. Manitoba Moosecrew (11-2)

The overall points leader (and it is not even close) the Moosecrew were a juggernaut through eight weeks, scoring 200+ points and going 7-1, with a 2 point loss to the Rum Ham the only smudge on their record. Their points dipped slightly in the late season but their success did not outside of a week twelve egg against the surging Tommy Boys, and in a statement win they flexed their muscles at full power in week thirteen against another strong squad in the Treason. Absolutely stacked at WR (Cooper Kupp, Tyreek Hill, Ja'Marr Chase) the team may be exploring RB contingencies before their week fifteen return to action.

2. Deputy Van Halens (9-4)

After an 0-2 start the Van Halens quietly put together an incredible season- in hindsight, those tight losses might have been the fire than hardened the steel. On the legs of Derrick Henry the team reeled off five wins in a row before he went down; after a pair of real stinkers in his immediate absence, the team rebounded and stealthily rose to the #2 seed. The offense is not going to blow anyone away, but shrewd matchup play got them this far, and without a week fourteen matchup to worry about they should have an optimized roster for the semi-final.

3. Mar-A-Lago Treason (9-4)

The Treason matched their best record in franchise history at 9-4 with a decade between winning seasons. After pacing the league as they raced out to a 7-0 start, Mar-A-Lago's 2-4 finish is cause for some concern- but a strong showing (albeit, in defeat) in their finale could mark a resurgence. Of note is an injury to Adam Thielen who has the early game this week and could have used a first round bye to recuperate. With David Montgomery rejoining Leonard Fournette this team has a dynamic one-two punch, but a lot of this team's postseason results will hinge on DangeRuss Wilson returning to form.

4. Philadelphia Rum Ham (9-4)

Another long suffering franchise, the Rum Ham put together their best ever season on their thirteenth try despite remaining doggedly loyal to Matty Ice. Matt Ryan scored 30 points in week nine, and 10 points or less in five of the other six games, including negative points twice. IT DOESN'T MATTER. Jonathan Taylor and Cordarrelle Patterson supplied an unstoppable running attack, while the rest of the playmakers and defense did their part. Taylor is on bye in the playoff's first round (a quirk of the new seventeen game season) so while he got the team this far, they'll need to get through this next bit without their MVP.

5. South Park Cows (9-4)

The Cows have a bit of a strange pattern going here, as they won three games, lost two games, won three games, lost two games, and then won three games again. They will look to buck this trend in the playoffs, but may need to do it without their top two receiving threats, Jaylen Waddle (Bye) and Keenan Allen (Questionable with COVID-19) leaving a scrappy offense at its scrappiest. That said, Tom Brady has shined up plenty of lesser talents in his career, and Clyde Edwards-Helaire could erupt after recovering from injury and seeing a plum matchup in week fourteen.

6. Ohio Tommy Boys (8-5)

On October 18th the Tommy Boys were 1-5 and at the bottom of the standings. Ever since that point, all they have done is win. The hottest team in football, Ohio will be a terrifying #6 seed, especially if Alvin Kamara returns to pair with Joe Mixon. If Kamara cannot go, Ohio will be plucking a man off the street, and with a wideout group that is more floor than ceiling, more of the playmaking onus will fall on George Kittle, who put together an all-time day in the season finale.

Just missing the playoffs at 7-5 are the Binghamton Snipers and HCM City Leady Farmers. While both teams have to be disappointed with their season, their winning records have ensure that they'll have top four draft slots for Larkspur Bowl XIV. It's a consolation prize, but one well earned- both teams will return to action in Week Fifteen to suss out their final standing.
