While the Larkspur Bowl draft is the singular most important date in roster formation, each team comes together over the course of the season via a series of transactions. On the cusp of finishing the regular season, we're about to see two team rosters reach their final state; Perhaps not the worst two teams, but the two least successful teams. We'll examine how each team got to where it did in detail when we recap seasons individually- but for now lets take a bird's eye view on things.
Players highlighted in green started and finished the thirteen week odyssey with the same team; The amount of retained players ranged from six (PRH) to thirteen (SPC, ORG, MMC), with teams averaging about nine keepers. However, keeping players or cutting them was hardly indicative of success or lack thereof. A successful draft and good fortune might keep two thirds of your roster intact, whereas knowing when to move on from a player (or trade them) is just as credible a route to glory.
Players highlighted in red were put on IR. Almost impossible to predict, early season injuries can be the impetus to a dramatically reshaped roster; Beyond the casualty themselves, teams are often forced to move from abundance to cover weaknesses. While an early season injury can be detrimental, the late season injuries, post deadline have far less recourse.
Trades are tough to prognosticate, and hindsight can be rude. Traded players are highlighted in blue- jettisoned draft picks on the left, and acquisitions on the right. Who plays a role in the post season is often a measure of attrition rather than talent; At the end of the year we'll identify the best adds of the year. I can identify the worst already: RB James Conner, cut by HCM City immediately following the draft. Oops!
