This year's final four came from different directions- South Park was dominant all year, while Phoenix remained steady throughout. Pawnee rounded into peak form in the back half of the year while Hill Valley alternated between wins and losses for eleven weeks before finally putting together back to back wins and ensuring a playoff spot. While each team is very different, colored by their head coach's philosophies and their roster's health and fortune, each team's story at quarterback could be construed as indicative of their path to the edge of glory. Here they are, the Final Four gunslingers in Larkspur Bowl X:
Drew Brees, "Ole Reliable" #1 South Park Cows 9-4
The fourth quarterback off the board, Drew Brees has scored better than all three quarterbacks he was picked behind- though two are still alive, and the other (Cam Newton - ORG) was just vanquished on Monday Night. What Brees, nearly 40, offers better than anyone else is a weekly floor and ceiling- every game plan goes through him, and he rarely makes mistakes, his insane 31:1 TD to INT ratio showcasing his precision. While two quarterbacks have outscored him to date, one had a grand total of one game played to his credit at draft time, while the other, Big Ben Roethlisberger, is incessantly hobbled. Brees was the sure bet compliment to MVP candidate Todd Gurley and the two of them drove the most potent production in the league by a landslide. South Park outscored its nearest competition (PAW) by 144.13 points; It outscored the worst team (BKB) by an astounding 622.95. The Killa Beez would have needed to play three and a half more weeks at their average clip to surpass that.
Andrew Luck, "Comeback Kid" #2 Phoenix Uprising 9-4
The 16th (of 18) quarterbacks selected in the draft, Andrew Luck was an afterthought for everyone except the still defending champions. Coming off a lost year there were more questions than answers about Luck's abilities, Phoenix trusted him to lead their team even through three mediocre weeks. In week four, Luck rewarded their faith, throwing for 464 yards and four touchdowns, and declaring he was back. From that point forward Luck has eclipsed 20 points in nine of ten games, scoring well enough to be #4 at the position, trailing Brees by 15 points, or just over 1 point per game. While the Uprising have turned over their roster everywhere else (the team only has other two starters from week one, defensive captains Bobby Wagner and Reshad Jones) Luck has remained a fixture, consistently giving the team a chance to win games.
Russell Wilson "The Backup Plan" #3 Pawnee Pride 8-5
DangeRuss was not the Pride's pick to start under center. Instead Pawnee selected young Patrick Mahomes to lead them into battle this year, making him the eight quartberack off the board in the seventh round, before much more proven commodities like Jared Goff, Matt Ryan, and Ben Roethlisberger. If it seemed like a reach that's because it was- but damn did that reach work out. Mahomes has been the top point scorer in the league this season, just in front of five running backs that were selected within the top twenty picks. Of course, Pat Mahomes isn't on Pawnee anymore, he's playing for New York in the consolation bracket. After making one risky gambit, the Pride cashed in their chip for Julio Jones and another upstart young QB, Mitch Trubinsky, whom they bundled with Juice Landry and some dude to pilfer Antonio Brown and Russell Wilson. Wilson hasn't been great this year- but he has been very good, and lining up with an offense as potent as the one the Pride assembled, that's all he needs to be to win.
Aaron Rodgers "The Warrior" #5 Hill Valley McFlys 7-6
By rights Mr Rodgers shouldn't even be here. The first quarterback selected, with the 31st overall pick, Hill Valley's signal caller appeared to suffer a knee injury in the season opener that might have ended his season right there. The McFlys had already lost fourth round pick Jerick McKinnon to an ACL injury, and unbeknownst to them at the time, their top pick Le'Veon Bell would never report to the team. But Rodgers got up, shook it off, and toughed it out, week after week, delivering gritty performances and willing his team into a playoff spot. The McFly's eye for discerning talent meant they still ended up third in overall points, enough to assure a playoff spot despite a 7-6 record. Statistically Rodgers is just a top ten quarterback on the year, profiling at #9 to date, but in a big spot he's the guy you want with the ball, and in these final two weeks no one would be surprised if he ends up triumphant.
