XI: Week Twelve Recap

No one has joined Hill Valley and Pawnee at the mathematically clinched table (both teams have now secured first round byes, with HVM nabbing the top overall seed) but New York and HCM City are both effectively moving onward, with insurmountable margins between them and the seven seed. Hill Valley and Pawnee met in last year's Larkspur Bowl, while New York and HCM City were both in the playoffs just two years ago, so none of these are real Cinderella stories- all four have been to at least one Larkspur Bowl, with Hill Valley winning twice and losing twice, New York winning once and losing once, Pawnee losing twice, and HCM losing once.

All four are who we thought they were: Real good football teams with palpable chances for glory.

That leaves four teams squabbling for the remaining two spots. South Park and Jersey effectively control their own fates, with a win each is into the dance. However, if one team wins and the other loses, the loser will be eliminated; With Carmel and Ohio set to face each other, the winner is assured to finish at 7-6 and would nab the final spot in that scenario. Meanwhile, due to the points race, if South Park and New Jersey both win, both Carmel and Ohio will still head to consolation bracket. The loser of Carmel vs Ohio is Consolation bracket bound regardless, and could even tumble far enough to miss a first round bye in that tournament!

A losing team has never made it to the Larkspur Bowl playoffs, but if South Park and New Jersey both lose this week it will happen. South Park holds a substantial edge should each team plunge under .500, and there's also a miracle path for a 5-7 team launching up to the six seed, though it would require pitiful losses by South Park and New Jersey along with a monumental win by either Savannah or Phoenix. With the current point totals, the margin each of those teams would need to overcome to supplant South Park as the 6th seed:
  • SAVANNAH: win & outscore SPC by 124.94 (while also outscoring JSC)
  • PHOENIX: win & outscore SPC by 145.34 (while also outscoring JSC and SAV)
Suffice to say, there's less than a 1% chance of either of those situations coming to pass; Both teams lost a pair of very close games this year, with Savannah falling by 8 points to South Park and 12 points to Philly, and Phoenix losing by 4 points to Pawnee and 9 points to Carmel. If any of those matchups had gone the other way, the ramifications on the playoff picture would be dramatic- however, this is the reality we're in and Spiderman is dead. The other 5-7 team, Binghamton, would need to erase a 280 point margin on South Park, which could not be done by taking the highest score in Larkspur Bowl History and comparing it to the lowest score in history, which gives them a 0% chance of making the playoffs in any reality.

After that, we've got the 4-8 teams at risk of possible relegation. Mar-A-Lago, Deputy, and South Philadelphia. For Mar-A-Lago and Deputy, a win should effectively grant them stay. However, a loss and a South Philly win could put them on the train to B-Town, where the Manitoba Moosecrew are currently enjoying a healthy lead on the competition. Should the B-Division winner choose to return to the A-League the 14th seed will be relegated, barring another manager stepping down, or a decision to expand in 2020. All that will be decided in the offseason- for now: Just win, baby.

It should be noted that there is still one week 12 result up in the air that could shake up the bottom of the standings- Savannah edged out Deputy by 4 points, pending stat corrections. If that changes, Savannah drops a  tier to the 'win or else' category, while Deputy joins Binghamton in the 'safely out of the basement but with not even a percentage point of a chance at the playoffs' category.

XI: Week Eleven Recap

After a low scoring week of football, five teams have guaranteed themselves losing records in 2019:

Savannah Petes
Mar-A-Lago Grabbers
Phoenix Uprising
Deputy Van Halens
South Philly Rum Ham

None of these teams are officially eliminated from playoff contention yet- but it's far more likely that one of them is facing potential relegation. Barring miracles: It will be an eight year playoff drought for Mar-A-Lago and a seven year absence for South Philly. It's going to be a second straight year missing the dance for Deputy and Savannah. And after nine straight years in the playoffs, Phoenix is poised to miss out in 2019.

At the top of the standings, no one has joined Hill Valley and Pawnee in the clinched column. The inside tracks belong to a pair of veteran squads in New York and HCM City, along with two newcomers, Carmel and Ohio. For all four, winning out will punch a ticket onward, an dlosing even a game jeopardizes their spot. Behind them, South Park, New Jersey, and Binghamton are champing at the bit... two weeks left... KICKING OFF TONIGHT.

XI: Week Ten Recap

Hill Valley's season has been blemished in an upside down week of Larkspur Bowl Action. Six of the league's top eight teams fell in week ten, flattening the playing field pretty dramatically. While the McFlys were joined by Pawnee at the playoff table, eleven of the league's remaining twelve teams are within two games of a playoff spot with three games remaining. Which means... any team that wins out has a pretty good chance of securing a bid. Which means... chaos!

HCM City, Ohio, New York, and Carmel all control their own fates the rest of the way- winning out DOES clinch a playoff spot for the four of them. However, that cannot actually happen, since HCM and Ohio both still have to play New York and Carmel in the season's final weeks. (Not to mention HCM has to play Pawnee and Carmel has to play Hill Valley, where both teams figure to be underdogs.) That opens up a path for any of the league's seven 4-6 squads to run the table and get to the dance, with a total points tiebreaker likely factoring in.

One week at a time we should start to see the pretenders fall off while the contenders rise to the occasion.

Week 10 Matchups

WEEK TEN POWER RANKINGS:
  1. NYF 279: Serving comeuppance to the champs, Lamar Jackson and the Finest put back to back 200+ up for the first time since weeks 1 & 2
  2. JSC 266: A 5 game losing streak had the luster off the crew, but they bounced back in a big way with winnable games in front of them
  3. PRH 246: They'll look to keep their second win streak of the season going via monster defensive performances and Tyreek Hill.
  4. PHX 242: After losing a pair of games by single digits, the Uprising keep their fire alive notching the first of four must-win victories
  5. PAW 214: Taking the mantle of hottest team in the league, but need to get past a rivalry game with DVH to push HVM for the 1 seed in wk 12
  6. MAL 211: The Grabbers win! Pat Mahomes is back at full power, but the team will have to do more winning to avoid risking relegation.
  7. BIN 211: If stat corrections don't overturn this result, their low point total may hinder their push- but losses would hurt more.
  8. HVM 205: The dream of an undefeated season is over, but the McFlys can now focus on optimizing their playoff roster for weeks 15 & 16
  9. SPC 201: The Cows hit a bump in their salvation route, but still lead in points among the unclinched. Won't matter without some wins though!
  10. SAV 194: Three straight losses (and losing 5 of 6) leaves that 3-1 start a distant memory. There's time to bounce back- it is now.
  11. DVH 186: Christian Kirk picked a great time to beast- without him, the inept Van Halen offense is eliminated; Instead they cling to life.
  12. OTB 183: Officially reeling after 3 straight losses, the Boys' glaring lack of depth at the skill positions (especially WR) exposes them.
  13. HCM 165: Jekyll (4 games north of 220) and Hyde (4 games south of 180) all season, the Lead Farmers seek consistency in the end game.
  14. CRT 153: At a crossroads: the Rudy-Toos have three matchups with teams ahead of them in the standings between them and a playoff berth.

XI: Tight Ends & Tighter Ends

This year's deadline was a muted affair, with a pair of one for one deals going down, with three of the four players exchanged lining up at the destitute tight end position- and the other guy was a tight end last year! Because of the mis-numeration on the trades to date, we end up with an even dozen deals on the season, the smallest number in a decade. Of the twelve deals, an astounding eleven of them end up involving either Pawnee or Phoenix, the league's premier movers and shakers.

TRADE 11 NOV 8
BINGHAMTON ACQUIRES RB JAYLEN SAMUELS
PAWNEE ACQUIRES TE CHRIS HERNDON

Jaylen Samuels is a handcuff- but one that's currently and admirably filling in as bell cow. He'll start right away, and will continue to be in consideration with Damien Williams in support of premier back Chris Carson. RB rich Pawnee spins off a player that was unlikely to ever see the field for them for Chris Herndon to supplement a hobble George Kittle and if he approaches some of the off-season hype, profile as a flex option. Following a suspension, Herndon was injured- but he will debut this week and could end up a difference maker in the back nine this year.

TRADE 12 NOV 9
HCM CITY ACQUIRES TE GREG OLSEN
PHOENIX ACQUIRES TE OJ HOWARD

Our final deal of the season saw Greg Olsen, already moved from New York to Phoenix earlier this season, shifting to the Lead Farmers. After a couple of big scores in the early season, G-Reg is much more floor than ceiling, but is likely to see some more red zone looks in the late season. Meanwhile, after a breakthrough in 2018, OJ Howard's production has regressed dramatically this year- disappointing in HCM City, but getting new life in Phoenix. Along with Hunter Henry and Mike Gesicki, the team may have to continue to rely on jumbo sets with AJ Green's return downgrade to uncertain.

XI: Deadline Impending

This year's trade deadline is drawing near, with transactions ceasing at 2:59am EST time on Sunday November 10th. (The deadline is set in PST, so 11:59pm on Saturday November 9th on the West Coast.)

This year's trade market has been fairly slow, with eleven ten trades to date; Last season there were twenty-one deals, after 2017 and 2016 both stalled out at sixteen deals a piece. You have to go past 2015 (19 trades), 2014 (23 trades), 2013 (29 trades!), 2012, (19 trades), and 2011 (14 trades) to 2010, when the league made only nine deals, to find a lower number.

That said, this year's exchanges have featured several of the blockbuster variety:

TRADE 1 SEPTEMBER 18
PHOENIX ACQUIRES WR MIKE WILLIAMS
PHILADELPHIA ACQUIRES WR CHRIS CONLEY & CB RONALD DARBY

TRADE 2 SEPTEMBER 20
PAWNEE ACQUIRES WR ANTONIO BROWN
MAR-A-LAGO ACQUIRES WR DEEBO SAMUEL

TRADE 3 SEPTEMBER 24
PHOENIX ACQUIRES: RB SAQUON BARKLEY, WR JARVIS LANDRY & TE GREG OLSEN
NEW YORK ACQUIRES: RB TODD GURLEY, WR MIKE WILLIAMS & WR DEMARCUS ROBINSON

TRADE 4
Apparently I skipped past a phantom fourth trade, presumably pre-coffee, while looking at the 'week four recap' blog that came between trade 3 and trade 5. I just noticed this now.

TRADE "5" OCTOBER 2
HILL VALLEY ACQUIRES: RB LE'VEON BELL
SOUTH PHILLY ACQUIRES: RB DAVID MONTGOMERY, WR DJ CHARK & LB PRESTON SMITH

TRADE "6" OCTOBER 6
PHOENIX ACQUIRES: RB WAYNE GALLMAN
PAWNEE ACQUIRES: QB DANIEL JONES

TRADE "7" OCTOBER 8
PAWNEE ACQUIRES RB DEVONTA FREEMAN
CARMEL ACQUIRES WE COURTLAND SUTTON

TRADE "8" OCTOBER 10
PHOENIX ACQUIRES: RB DAVID JOHNSON & LB DEION JONES
JERSEY ACQUIRES: RB MELVIN GORDON & LB DEMARIO DAVIS

TRADE "9" OCTOBER 17
JERSEY ACQUIRES: WR ALSHON JEFFERY & RB DEVONTA FREEMAN
PAWNEE ACQUIRES: WR MIKE EVANS

TRADE "10" OCTOBER 21
PAWNEE ACQUIRES: QB DREW BREES
CARMEL ACQUIRES: RB DEVIN SINGLETARY

TRADE "11" OCTOBER 26
PHOENIX ACQUIRES: RB MARK INGRAM
MAR-A-LAGO ACQUIRES: RB CARLOS HYDE & RB TEVIN COLEMAN

Remarkably, of the ten trades that have been made, nine of them involve either Pawnee or Phoenix, with each team making five deals- one with each other. The only trade to not include either of the two occurred between long tenured teams Hill Valley and South Philly.

XI: Week Nine Recap

Mar-A-Lago came out gangbusters, but has not dropped seven straight to plummet to the bottom of the standings and the first team to ensure a losing record in 2019. They'll have to right the ship to get out of relegation position, as the Manitoba Moosecrew look poised to win the inaugural B-Division at the hump.

The other relegation candidates are the Rum Ham (3-6, having clawed out a victory this week), Jersey (losers of five straight), and perennial Playoff contenders Deputy Van Halens and Phoenix Uprising. Phoenix will be praying for a stat correction overnight after a tight loss to Pawnee; They're already likely to end their streak of nine straight playoff appearances.

Burying the lede, the 9-0 Hill Valley McFlys have officially clinched their playoff spot, and are almost definitely assured a first round bye- the team has fallen off the past couple of weeks, but not enough to dent their record. Behind them Pawnee sits at 7-2 and in a prime spot to nab the other first round bye. Both teams battled in Larkspur Bowl X last year.

After that, HCM City came down from their monster scoring but still won, while Ohio and Marquise "Inactive" Goodwin have lost two in a row, drooping back to 4th. Alone at 5-4 is Carmel, winners of three in a row.

Then, South Park has fought all the way back, grabbing the six seed by virtue of their third highest score in the league; Also in contention are Savannah, New York, and Binghamton- any of the four can likely punch their playoff ticket by winning out the final month of the season.
