2013 California Swag

The Swag stormed into the League, winning it all in their first go-around. They followed a similar recipe for success in year two: Build a team based on absolute skill level rather than matchups and let the chips fall as they may. The regular season panned out as it did in 2012, with the team winning just enough to make the playoffs, but they could not catch the same lightning in a bottle, bowing out in the first round to eventual bronze medalist SCFC, before regaining a modicum of swagger in the consolation bowl, defeating Orgrimmar in what may be the 2009 Champion's final Larkspur Bowl game. Jason Kalmer's squad has the 9th pick in 2014.

2013 FINAL ROSTER

Team Owner: Jason Kalmer

Hometown: Revis Island, California

2013 Record: 7-6

2014 Draft Position: 9th

Week 12: *10. California 7-5 1723.42
Don't call it a comeback? A talented team struggles, but ends up scratching and clawing their way into the playoffs, then goes off for a Cinderella run. The Swag won the title last year with a similar script, and after winning four straight, have an opportunity to produce the sequel. They took a long way around, but they've built another stacked lineup, peaking just in time to give the higher seeds a big reason to worry.

Week 9: 11. California 4-5 1257.16
The Swag continue to linger, like they did last year before their championship run. Winning this week puts them one game closer to .500, and if they can take three of four, they will again finish 7-6 and likely take one of the final seeds. Their remaining schedule is not incredibly imposing: Chicago, Pawnee, Silver City, and New York. Two big trades with Hill Valley ended up shaping both of these franchises, with the Swag looking like it got the worst of the deals on paper. But the games are not played on paper- they're played on the internet the gridiron, and if the Swag can finish with a better record than the McFlys, they will be exonerated.

Week 6: 12. California 2-4 828.59
The Swag are likely to be haunted by their early season trade with the McFlys, where they gave up burgeoning WRs Vincent Jackson and Josh Gordon for boom-bust enigma Mike Wallace and RB16 Bilal Powell. It's one of those trades that you rethink the moment it goes through, and then afterwards you spend every week thinking 'What if?" They retain QB1 Drew Brees, WR1 Pierre Garcon, and should (finally) have TE1 Rob Gronkowski. If they can move past their early season regrets (and figure out a RB2 solution) the defending champs cannot be counted out in 2013; Going 5-2 in the second half would likely makes them a scary bottom seed in the playoffs... again.

Week 3: 12. California 1-2 405.84

The Swag have experienced some post championship hangover in their sophomore year, rolling inactives every week- more than half of their roster is carrying injury designation. Without enough healthy bodies, they've struggled mightily, their only win a gift from Oakwood in the season opener. The talent is there, nursing its wounds, but if they don't get some able bodies in the lineup soon their title defense will peter out before the reiforcements can arrive. They made a big move today- it could be the first of many, as the team tries to right the ship.

2013 Season Preview

The Swag earned their reputation, overcoming obstacles in their first season, fighting their way into playoffs, and reeling off three straight wins to clinch the Larkspur Bowl. They were no fluke either: They led the league in points. In 2013, they will look to be the second team to post back to back championships.
