XIII: Week Three Results

It is getting lonely at the top: Manitoba, Mar-A-Lago, and South Park are the last remaining undefeated. The Cows benefit from a reversal to get there, and the Treason are still subject to one after eking out a 2.38 margin of victory over Pawnee, who haver thrown the red challenge flag. The Moose Crew, (who will watch their baseball companions take the field for a championship round game five tonight) have been the league's best team through three weeks, scoring big points and never having a contest in question. The forthcoming power rankings will measure out who has a shot at taking them down.

Through three weeks we have seven winning teams and seven losing teams- there's plenty of time to reverse course, flip lots, and change fortunes, but with a 200 point gap between the top team and the last place (defending champion) Sanitation Crew, some narratives are already starting to crystallized.

The Crew have some good company at the bottom, where the three most recent Silver Chalice winners sit without a win between them. Week four will see either Jersey or Pawnee shake off their doldrums, as they face off against one another- the loser, at 0-4, will have to deal with whispers in the fanbase about being washed up. Meanwhile, Hill Valley gets their arch rival Phoenix, reeling after a lackluster showing against Deputy in week three; the McFlys have never started a season 0-4.

There is a second game under review: Carmel and Binghamton both came into week three at 1-1, and the Snipers walked off the field victors, 210.23-208.39. That is close enough to be flipped on a single IDP attribution, so it is something to watch in the coming days; scores are not final until Thursday morning.

Elsewhere in the league South Philly is surging and looking legitimate, while HCM City look to shrug off a disappointing loss and get back to the winning ways they have established over the past few seasons. Deputy and Ohio got out of the dog house with their first wins of the season after a pair of miscues, while the Savannah Petes will have to prove that their week one showcase was not a mirage.

The trade market has been quiet early in the season, a couple of minor deals going through. With the Trade Deadline set for November 20th, that gives us fifty-four days to see some blockbusters come together.

Week 3 Matchups

QB: JUSTIN HERBERT (HVM) 32.94
With Josh Allen's efforts wasted on the Savannah bench, Herbert edges out Manitoba's Matt Stafford for the week three nod, tossing four touchdowns and just looking incredibly adept building upon his rookie year. He jammed his throwing hand mid-game but did not miss a play and looks all systems go as a QB1.

RB: NAJEE HARRIS (MMC) 26.9
Through three games Harris has not broken out running the ball, but his 14 carries for 14 yards are a footnote, as 14 catches (on 19 targets) and 102 receiving yards is a full day's work on its own. For good measure he also logged a tackle, proving a triple threat!

WR: MIKE WILLIAMS (MAL) 34.50
Big Mike has shown the capacity to take over games before, and here, again. Seven catches for 122 yards, a pair of TDs and a two point conversion are a phenomenal day, and through three weeks of year five, it looks like Williams might be putting it all together as a WR1.

TE: MARK ANDREWS (SPC) 17.60
After a slow start to his season, Mr Andrews broke out with a five catch, 109 yard performance for the Cows. With Dalton Schultz (CRT) and Ty Conklin (HCM) on their respective benches, that effort gets top billing this time around.

DL: MYLES GARRETT (SAV) 35.00
With seven tackles, 4 for a loss, and 4.5 times tossing the quarterback like a ragdoll, Myles Garrett is the player of the week in a losing cause, bouncing back from a quiet week two.

LB: KENNY YOUNG (SPC) 28.00
Ten tackles (three for a loss) a sack and forced fumble are good enough for a disruptor that has been filling the stat sheet early in 2021 and fortifying a Cows defense that has helped the team overachieve on its way to a 3-0 start.

CB: BYRON MURPHY (DVH) 31.80
A couple of picks, a couple of pass defenses, four tackles, and a punt return touchdown-Murphy was a major factor in the Van Halens trouncing of the Uprising. Further testament to stick with your quality IDPs following a disappointing week.

SS: MICAH HYDE (CRT) 22.05
With Old Man Jenkins on the waiver wire, Hyde is the pick; making one of those, breaking up another pair of passes, and making five stops, one for a loss. Hyde is another dual threat defensive players/special teams ace and has been proving his worth in the Larkspur Bowl for years; he's served up three double digit performances through three weeks.

K: MASON CROSBY (PAW) 17.50
His game ending kick did not have the pizzazz and artistry of Justin Tucker's 66 yarder, but three field goals and three PATs is a nice bit of scoring- plus he made a solo tackle, always a highlight for a kicker.

Trade 2: The Bench Edge Wiggle

After a series of deliberations that started as a blockbuster and ended as something significantly smaller, Savannah and Phoenix finished a deal to exchange skill position depth players.

SAVANNAH ACQUIRES WR SAMMY WATKINS
PHOENIX ACQUIRES RB KENYAN DRAKE

Sammy Watkins has never lived up to the hype that comes with being the fourth overall pick, but he has shown flashes of the playmaking ability that gives him such a high ceiling. A litany of ailments has dogged him, but every year he's been able to deliver some monstrous games only to go quiet other weeks when he was ostensibly healthy. Now on his fourth franchise potential remains for him to be a more consistent threat as the season goes on, and a Petes team desperate for productive wideouts see a viable starter that can average double digit production over the course of the season.

Kenyan Drake came into the league with considerably less ballyhoo, but has carved out a career as a durable slasher, more in a supplementary role than as a bellcow. Joining a new offense this year, he has nearly as many receptions as rushes, but has double digit touches in both games so far. With 18th round pick Watkins buried on the bench, Phoenix gets Savannah's 14th rounder to help supplement a RB corps that has limited upside.

Week 2: Cows Upend McFlys

It was too close to call on Monday night, but it's official now!

The South Park Cows defeated the Hill Valley McFlys after stat corrections. The numbers are a bit murky- the Cows definitely received a net gain of 1.5 following a PD from Linebacker Fred Warner (minus a lost tackle from Darius Leonard) while the McFlys had DJ Reed gain a point when an assist became a solo tackle, Joe Schoebert lose a point when a solo tackle became and assist, and Bobby McCain add half a point for an assisted tackle, but that leaves the margin slim, while the official tally ended up a close, but irrefutable 198.42 - 193.12 edge for the team from Colorado.

Nonetheless! That bounces the Cows up to an unblemished 2-0 while dropping the once proud McFlys to the a cellar they share with former champions Pawnee and New Jersey, as well as less renowned franchises Ohio and Deputy.

XIII: Week Two Results

Unlike present-day America, the Larkspur Bowl has a burgeoning middle class! Three teams rose to 1-1, three teams fell to 1-1, and all six are stuck in the middle of four HAVES with two wins, and four HAVE NOTS with two losses.

At least for now- stat corrections can come until Thursday morning, and a matchup between two former champions had a wild finish decided by two tenths of a point; McFly linebacker De'Vondre Campbell, a late addition to the starting lineup, ended the game with a pick to cap an improbable comeback for a Hill Valley team that appeared destined for an 0-2 start. Now South Park will have to pay to the meticulous football gods that there was a tackle assist off in the balance sheets, as pretty much any net gain would flip the result and launch South Park to the land of the undefeated, while dropping Hill Valley to the pavement. STAY TUNED!

For now, these are the results- Phoenix leaves points on the table but comes away unscathed; The other five winners (Manitoba, Mar-A-Lago, Binghamton, South Philly, and HCM City) put up much more robust point totals in their no-doubt victories. Besides the aforementioned South Park folly, the hardest luck belongs to Deputy, who is now 0-2 despite the sixth most points tallied to date.

Our most recent Champions, LBXII title holder New Jersey and LBXI winner Pawnee are in the cellar, both 0-2 and yet to break 340 points on the season. Neither has to sound the alarm just yet, as both clearly know how to win games- but the less than auspicious start is hemorrhaging leverage and beyond the lack of wins, they are both already 165+ points behind the points leading Treason. Tiebreaks will matter down the road and every point missed could be the difference.

Week 2 Matchups

TEAM OF THE WEEK 2:

QB: KYLER MURRAY (CRT) 32.40
This could have easily been Binghamton's Lamar Jackson (who had a great day and actually won his matchup over Ohio) but Murray edges him by fractional points, throwing for 400 yards and three TDs and scrambling for another 31 yards, taking the ball to the end zone on his own. Two games in and Murray is an MVP candidate

RB: DERRICK HENRY (DVH) 53.80
Henry proved he was still the league's preeminent juggernaut in week two, rumbling for 237 total yards on 41 touches, finding the end zone thrice and moving the chains a dozen times. Perhaps one day the big man will slow down, but until then he's an unstoppable a force as this sport has ever seen.

WR: COOPER KUPP (MMC) 40.80
The 39th overall pick in August's draft, Kupp is the WR1 so far, only surprising because he continues to be underrated. Nine catches for 163 yards, two big plays, two scores, and eight first downs in this one- the only blemish was an ill-fated rush for -5 yards. OH NO! Kupp may not end up the WR1 for the duration of the season, but then again, MAYBE HE WILL.

TE: TRAVIS KELCE (PHX) 26.70
As a first round draft pick, a lot is expected of Kelce- but the veteran keeps on delivering. This time it was seven catches for 109 yards and a TD, nabbing a new set of downs half a dozen times. He goes for big plays, he gets volume, he finds the end zone, and as long as he keeps on doing that, Phoenix can justify their investment.

DL: DANIELLE HUNTER (OTB) 26.50
Hunter was projected as the top DL in 2020 coming off back-to-back monster campaigns, but instead had a lost season, as injuries kept him from appearing in a game. Well, he has not lost a step, adding three sacks in week two, counting among his seven total tackles.

LB: ROQUAN SMITH (BIN) 33.65
Ousting his teammate Bobby Wagner (he of 20 total tackles) by just over a point and a half, Roquan took a pick 53 yards to the house in this one, while also adding eight tackles, a sack and a TFL, and a PD for good measure. Binghamton's swarming defense is a clear difference maker.

CB: TRAYVON MULLEN JR (PRH) 22.25
With Ohio leaving JC Jackson in reserve, Mullen gets the honor here; seven tackles, two swats, and a pick returned for 15 yards helping to provide the difference in a hotly contested matchup with Deputy.

SS: KHARI WILLIS (MAL) 19.5
With the Honey Badger left on the shelf in Joisey, it's the Treason's duo of Safeties that made the biggest impact on week two: Willis made seven tackles with a PD and a pick; teammate Justin Reid matched the PD and pick, added a forced fumble, and chipped in four tackles of his own. That's how you disrupt a game plan!

K: GRAHAM GANO (SAV) 22.00
The kicker was aa bright spot in a game where the Petes' woeful lack of offensive weapons was highlighted; If you thought Patrick Mahomes and DeAndre Hopkins could do it on their own, well, no. Top waiver claim Eli Mitchell suffered a stinger and everyone else was terrible- their second, third, fourth, and fifth receiving options accounting for a grand total of 4.3 points. Oh, Gano! He was awesome, hitting 5 field goals and 2 PATs.

We'll keep an eye on that Hill Valley vs South Park booth review, with power rankings coming after we put a third sample on the books. Trade market remains quiet, but with injuries being sustained and clear needs being identified, transaction solutions are likely around the corner.

XIII: Week One Results

Thirteenth Season, Round One in the books.
Half the league are winners, half the league are losers, and half of each number were in the playoffs last season. Some of that is any given Sunday, some of that is draft value, some of that is good fortune. But here we are, on the eve of our first waiver period. Picking up the pieces, re-assembling them, looking to build momentum.

In the winner's circle: The freshly re-named Mar-A-Lago Treason scoring BIGLY; HCM City looking to get back to the big game for the third time in five years; The Manitoba Moosecrew, who were never actually relegated they just took a gap year; Phoenix Uprising with playoff entry in 10 of 11 years- and four trophies; The Rudy-Toos, who took five tries to win once last year; LBVII champion the always dangerous South Park; and the Savannah Petes bouncing back from a horrific 3-10 campaign.

Winless wonders include: OTB, who scored the 4th most points in week one and was our hard luck loser; Deputy who was hurt by a Za'Darius Smith ejection and a Cameron Jordan goose egg; Binghamton who played adequately but lacked for a gamebreaker; The McFlys who have been in 4 of 5 playoffs- winning it all twice; The Rum Ham who have been on the edge of obscurity for seven straight seasons; our defending champion Sanitation Crew; and the Pawnee Pride who have just never been the same since winning LBXI and hoarding the trophy like Gollum.

Week 1 Matchups

TEAM OF THE WEEK 1:

QB: PATRICK MAHOMES (SAV) 34.18
Mahomes engineered this victory, tinkering with the defense and then putting up points in bunches; Today he threw for three scores, ran for another, and made 355 yards offense. His place in the Savannah huddle is assured barring injury, making Josh Allen the most expensive bench warmer in the league. The Petes should be gauging the market for him weekly- if they can get dependable RB2 and WR2 for him, that'd be a win.

RB: CHRISTIAN McCAFFREY (SPC) 27.70
From the "They Are Who We Thought They Were" department, McCaffrey justifies his draft position by being an all around weapon and juggernaut offensive engine. It all runs through him, so as long as he's upright, he's a difference maker. Duh! 1287 total yards on 30 touches, eight first downs, but no end zone dances.

WR: TYREEK HILL (MMC) 38.10
Hill's diminutive frame makes has does not matter when he remains the most elusive wideout in the game; the biggest enemy for him could be game flow, as the team will likely throttle down if they win a blowout instead of a shootout. Week one's shootoutr saw 11 catches, 197 yards, eight first downs, and a long TD.

TE: ROB GRONKOWSKI (MMC) 26.50
At this point in his career Gronk might be touchdown dependent (he had two in week one) but after his mom found his football pants and he shook off the rust, it's also possible he's going to have TE1 volume again, like in his '14-'17 prime. Time will tell, but this was a good time: 8 catches, 90 yards.

DL: NICK BOSA (MAL) 18.00
The younger Bosa made up for lost time in this one, returning from his injury plagued 2020 to score a sack and three tackles for loss. An every-down disruptor, he's one of a handful that is a good bet to be in contention for this spot week-in and week-out.

LB: CHANDLER JONES (MAL) 42.00
There are two schools of though with Larkspur Bowl linebackers: Get the MLB tackle machines that wear the green dot and give you dependable double digits almost every week, or get one of the freakishly athletic OLBs that can destroy a game plan with ease if the offense does not prioritize staying away from them. Jones and his 5 sacks are the latter.

CB: LOGAN RYAN (SAV) 22.00
Ten tackles, one for as loss, a fumble forced and a fumble recovered, Logan Ryan was a difference maker today, as he has been most weeks over the past eight years. An irreplaceable asset at an otherwise thoroughly replaceable position.

SS: KEVIN BYARD (OTB) 14.10
Somewhat under heralded, Byard has been a mainstay at the safety for half a decade, gobbling up tackles and never missing a game. The PDs and INTs have dipped since his 2017 monster season, but he got one of each in his 2021 debut, part of a strong defensive effort despite a tough loss.

K: MATT GAY (SPC) 12.00
Missed a long one but banged 4 PATs and a 20 something yarder, good enough for the top spot among rostered kickers.

Power Rankings will be done every third week, to more accurately gauge week-to-week variance; Further exploration of teams will be done by blog post rather than weekly segment, as the instant analysis becomes canned and stagnant. We'll focus on looking at positional strength and player breakouts, rather than rehashing on a weekly basis.

Trade 1: The Meat Grinder

Phoenix drafted JK Dobbins in the second round shortly before he tore his ACL. South Park drafted Gus Edwards in the 12th round and stood to benefit from the Dobbins injury, until Edwards was felled by the same injury. Carmel picked up Ty'Son Williams after the draft concluded and then swapped him for the Uprising's 11th round pick.

CARMEL ACQUIRES: WR DeVANTE PARKER
PHOENIX ACQUIRES: RB TY'SON WILLIAMS

How this deal shakes out will mostly depend upon Williams; DeVante Parker is a credible WR3 that has shown flashes of upside to slot in a couple of tiers higher than that. Health and opportunities are both question marks, but the Rudy-Toos have added a viable piece to their offense.

The Uprising will have to see how this shakes out- Monday night will be Williams debut. After a flurry of transactions, RB Latavius Murray appears poised to take a potential bellcow role away from him, and other marquee names wait in the wings: Le'veon Bell and Devonta Freeman are both on the roster look for one more chance to show their legs still have lightning in them.

XIII: Season Preview

The season is here! Previewing the season is a fool's errand as injuries and effectiveness will wreck havoc upon our season on a weekly basis. Position projections were pulled prior to yesterday's game, with an eye on overall depth.

The top of the Quarterback heap is, bar none, the Savannah Petes who took a pair of elite passers in Patrick Mahomes and Josh Allen. If they have an eye on trading one, that might work- but the QB market is fickle and oversaturated- at current, 23 signal callers have roster spots, and no team has a glaring need at the position. Certainly an upgrade is possible, but at what cost is to be determined.

At running back we gauge each team's top three options- the position is a notorious churn, and there's a good possibility that some of the top ten point getters this season are not even listed on the chart above. That said, there is tiered series of apparent strength here; keep in mind that there's no place for a third RB, so to some extent, if everything goes right, that is wasted value sitting on the bench in all but two bye weeks.

With teams starting up to four WRs each week, it's a volatile position where depth can really be tested- every season injuries and bye weeks force a team to start someone they never expected to, where they could become an unlikely hero, or be the Achilles heel to a playoff push. After a handful of elite Tight-Ends, the position is predominantly touchdown dependent- how teams navigate that (streaming or riding the waves) can easily be the difference between a playoff berth and a consolation game.

Defenses remain something of an enigma- it's clear when a player produces, but it is not always apparent how to prognosticate when a player will produce. As such, teams are often left chasing points that are already on the board. Because of this, IDPs are often given minimal trade value in exchange for offensive weapons. Ultimately defenses typically provide the production floor for a team, while also having game changing ability: a turnover that goes for a touchdown is only rivaled by a special teams TD in terms of matchup impact. Balancing tackle machines with big-play catalysts is the line we walk.

LBXIII: Draft Results

Following the Draft, Yahoo! awarded grades, with Phoenix scoring the top spot for the umpteenth time. They celebrated by immediately destroying the knee of second round pick JK Dobbins. JK MY ASS!

While the initial projections are unlikely to come to fruition, they do feature four teams that have been in one of the last two playoffs- but neither of our past two champions (XII: Jersey Crew or XI: Pawnee Pride) nor the only two teams to make both of the last two playoff brackets (Hill Valley and HCM City) so, there's that. It's a rosy prognostication for Savannah (last playoff was LBIX) and the yet to be renamed Mar-A-Lago franchise (last playoff was LBIII) and a dreadful one for the Carmel Rudy Tuesdays, who will almost assuredly not go 0-14. (If Oakwood never did, nobody ever will.)

For posterity, there's a rundown of the draft results below.
