VIII: Week Twelve Results

Pawnee established their absolute primacy after a dozen weeks, knocking off two seed Manitoba to ensure their top billing. Neither Deputy nor Phoenix could take advantage of the MooseCrew's loss and make a play at the second seed, so along with Hill Valley and the Islanders, we see four teams at 7-5 trying to punch their ticket at the last moment. Behind them, Malibu and Saskatoon wait and pray at 6-6. Everyone else has fallen out of playoff contention, four teams at 5-7, LBVII champions South Park at 4-8, and Oakwood officially post season ineligible at 3-9.

PLAYOFF SCENARIOS:

Half of the teams still have to lose this week, but we're as close to settling the brackets as we can be: The top six are all in control of their own destiny. Pawnee has secured the top spot (unless Manitoba wins, outscores the Pride by 126.59, and Malibu upsets them, in which case they'll be the two seed) and then we might see the other five teams get in with matching 8-5 records. More likely, we'll see a team in the playoffs at 7-6; At least one team has made the dance at that record every year, and sometimes as many as three seven win teams populate the push.

The Islanders and MooseCrew are the only two teams currently in playoff position that matchup in week thirteen: Manitoba has already clinched a spot and with a win can secure a bye. The Islanders are in with a win, but with a loss, they'll be rooting against Malibu and Saskatoon: They have comfortable margins of 69.85 and 82.17 over each, so it would take a massive turn from either to uproot ISL. On the outside looking in, the Deadbeats have to face League powerhouse Pawnee, while the Sasquatch get an unfavorable date with Hill Valley, the favorite to land the second bye should Manitoba falter. Phoenix is in the six slot after a horrendous penultimate showing, however, defeating Toronto in week 13 gets them into the playoffs for a seventh consecutive year. A loss has them on thin ice: their points margin over Malibu is a mere 26.1 and they stand just 38.42 over Saskatoon. A weak PHX showing against LTP coupled with big days from either team could bounce them to relegation. Hill Valley and Deputy can feel pretty confident about their positioning, as either could move up to the second bye with a big day and an Islander win, but neither is in any real danger of slipping out of the playoffs, even if they do bungle their final regular season game.

If Malibu and/or Saskatoon cannot strum up enough magic to sneak into the big dance, they can count on the consolation bracket's draft seeding tournament for some post season football. Likewise, tough luck HCM City, can't catch a break Savannah, and no bench depth Toronto have all solidified their bids, with credible point totals and a game in hand. HCM is likely to nab a bye with a win and a Malibu or Saskatoon loss; Savannah could do the same if they win and two of the other three teams lose. The final consolation bowl bid is New York's to fumble- a win will get them into competition. However, with the lowest output in the league to date, they'd need to outscore South Park by at least 24.12 in defeat if the Cows can drop the Petes in their final game. South Park is the first team to miss the playoffs in their title defense, and is on track to miss any sort of postseason, a stunning cliff for the champions to careen off of. Oakwood has put up more points than both SPC and NYF, but couldn't get the Ws, and will finish their season this week no matter what- in either 13th or 14th.

Week 12 Matchups

POWER OUTPUT
  1. ISL 239: The Islanders responded to a stat correction loss by posting their best score of the year
  2. PAW 235: Two teams entered with eight wins- the one at the top of the Power Rankings exited with nine
  3. HVM 234: All but clinched, the McFlys return to the playoffs after back to back consolation bowl victories
  4. MDB 235: Unwilling to go without a fight, the Deadbeats have won 3 of 4 and now have a chance to drop PAW
  5. SAV 233: Rounding into form late in the season: too late. Could make some consolation bracket noise
  6. MMC 217: A loss but not a bad showing; Securing a bye would mean auto-entry to the semis in 1st ever playoff
  7. LTP 206: Toronto's up and down season should go consolation bracket, could spoil Phoenix' run
  8. DVH 197: With a chance to move into position for the two seed, the Van Halens faltered but didn't fall
  9. HCM 187: This is actually the third worst week for a team that never scored below 178 in a week all season
  10. SPC 184: The Cows have now had four seperate two game skids this season, unable to get any (good) momentum
  11. SAS 175: Stat correction victory followed by low scoring victory, but 6 game slide may be too much to overcome
  12. NYF 174: Weeks 3-7 196+ pts; All other weeks 174 pts or less. Fortunate win gifts them chance at Consolation
  13. OAK 167: With the loss they will finish in the bottom four for the fourth time in all four years of existence
  14. PHX 150: Big point hangover is a real thing. Uprising have to hope they don't fall play to Sasquatch malady

The Reversal

Week eleven saw controversy as the final ruling on the field was reversed, giving Saskatoon a narrow victory over the Islanders. A Nigel Bradham pass defense was taken off the board, reducing ISL's 189.04 points to 186.04. The Sasquatch score of 187.18 held up to review, giving them a slim margin of victory- just enough to staunch Saskatoon's seven game skid, and restore their playoff chances.

Accordingly, the standings have become more congested, with ten teams still in the race for the final four playoff spots. The Islanders fall from fifth to sixth (retaining control over their destiny, but only just) while Saskatoon moves up from tenth to eighth, and within striking distance of a point tiebreak that could come into play at 7-6. Only Pawnee and Manitoba have their slots assured heading into week twelve.

VIII: Week Eleven Results

With two weeks to go in the season, we've seen a narrowing at the top: presumptive top seeds Pawnee and Manitoba both lost to fall to 8-3, putting the first round byes back in play. They face each other in this week's marquee matchup, where the winner has a clear path directly to the semifinals and the loser will likely fall into tiebreak situation for seeding.

Phoenix put up the second best score of all time this week, dropping 256.01 on Malibu and diminishing the Deadbeats's playoff hopes to the scant prayer variety. The Uprising remain a point or so behind Deputy, who do well knocking off the MooseCrew. Both teams have seven wins and top four point totals, so it would take an utter collapse for either to miss the playoffs, while winning out would give either team a good chance to secure themselves a bye week. It will be a horse race!

The Islanders come all the way back to stun the reeling Sasquatch, who improbably lose their seventh straight game after their 4-0 start. That 299.38 score was a curse on their house. It's a huge W for RI, who have some wiggle room in their final two matchups- win just one and they're in! Tasked with the surging Lead Farmers and then Manitoba, they will not have any gimmes, and losing both could prove catastrophic for the LBIV champs.

The McFlys still control their own destiny, but have no more room for missteps after dropping week eleven to Savannah. Beat the Cows and the Sasquatch (two teams trending downwards) and they're comfortably in the big dance. Lose either of those games and they'll likely need to bank on a tiebreak. With fairly significant leads on Malibu and Toronto, the big fear for Hill Valley has got to be HCM City, who have overcome an insane gauntlet just to loom large in the seven slot. No playoff team wants to see HCM line up across the gridiron.

Everyone else is playing for their 2017 draft position, which is, as a reminder, structured like this: 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 5, 6, 3, 4, 2, 1

Saskatoon's early rise is attributable to their bookend picks of Julio Jones and Matt Ryan; Jones will again project as a lottery choice in 2018, while THE FRANCHISE Matty Ice is likely to return to the first five rounds. The long term viability of the Sasquatch blueprint needs to be looked at long and hard this off season, as the team tries to get back to the playoffs for the first time since 2012.

Savannah's tough go of things has had some bright spots, as 2016 can be written off as another Murphy's Law result; The team can feel pretty confident in their strategies, and hope next season their plans can bring fruition.

South Park and New York won the past two Larkspur Bowl Championships, but now find themselves dueling to nab the final spot in the Consolation bracket, an unexpected turn of events. Past hoping to get hot in the last month of the year to grab a top pick going forward, each team can play spoiler to some playoff hopefuls, as the Finest get Phoenix and Deputy in their final weeks, and the Cows play a McFly team that desperately needs a penultimate W.

Oakwood has, at the end, made a go of things as well, winning two straight as they reach the soft spot of their schedule FINALLY. Winning out would give them a month of victories to close the season and perhaps catapult them out of the cellar and into the Consolation Bracket, boding well for the downtrodden. Hope is a hell of a thing.

Week 11 Matchups

POWER OUTPUT:
  1. PHX 256: Dalton is suddenly fresh out of friends, which is about the only bad news in Phoenix right now
  2. DVH 217: David Johnson is the prototypical RB1 that will be in the top pick conversation for years to come
  3. MMC 206: Tough luck loss for the Crew, but clinched with their team playing its best football headed for DEC
  4. HCM 198: Regression was coming- and that meant wins for HCM. The last chance for a Cinderella dance in 2016
  5. SAV 195: Life without Gronk was just fine this week, though we expect they want him back as soon as possible
  6. ISL 189: Khalil Mack didn't dominate, but he did just enough- totally justifying his top billing at DL
  7. SAS 187: Oh noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo this is super depressing
  8. OAK 183: Battling back to respectability, Drivers will again finish under .500 but could make interesting CB bid
  9. HVM 182: Every year with these guys, do they even want to make the playoffs or prefer being king of losers?
  10. PAW 179: Top seed laid low twice in a row, not time to start worrying yet... but could really use a win this week
  11. LTP 165: Toronto wins despite holes in their secondary. Loss of AJ Green adds injury to insult- but he may return
  12. MDB 160: It was never in the cards this week for Malibu, who can still rally to finish with a winning record.
  13. SPC 152: The magic is gone in South Park, the championship hangover dropping the Cows lower and lower
  14. NYF 147: A force to be reckoned with in '14 and '15, the Finest will look to return to the promised land in '17
