Taste the Rainbow

We have not seen any trades go down yet this season, but by looking backwards we can see some trends: Savannah and New York have hooked up for the most deals over the years, with ten transactions. Hill Valley and Pawnee are in second at eight, while Phoenix has made six moves with each of his familial units. The Uprising lead the league with 31 total trades, and have traded with thirteen different teams-  five of them no longer active. The McFlys have made 27 total moves, with twelve unique teams, four of whom are inactive. Manitoba is the only monogamous team, having only traded twice, both times with Liberal. South Park is the only abstinent team, having never signed off on a deal- albeit, in only a single (very successful) season of action.

The most coveted player over the past half decade? Beast Mode.
Marshawn has been moved seven times!

Another Torn ACL

It's a bad time to be a marquee WR:

HCM City has reportedly lost their second round pick (and top receiving threat) Jordy Nelson to a torn ACL. He's the second top pick to go down and out for the season on the young season, after the Deputy Van Halens lost Kelvin Benjamin in a similar (non contact) scenario. We're still eighteen days from kickoff, and the calls for the draft to occur later in August are being heard. The Commissioner has announced that the 2016 draft will tentatively be scheduled for ten to fourteen days before the regular season opener- little solace for teams that are already shorthanded this year.

Injuries happen, but they're especially heartbreaking when a player has not even been able to suit up for a single regulation snap. It will be interesting to see how each team recovers, and what other stars are vulnerable. Defending champion New York's Finest seem to be the most obvious beneficiary, as their WR Davante Adams should be the beneficiary of many of Jordy Nelson's targets. How it impacts their QB Aaron Rodgers has yet to be determined:

A video posted by Olivia Munn (@oliviamunn) on

Meanwhile, PawneeHill Valley and Liberal HT have responded by signing WR Ty Montgomery, WR Jeff Janis and TE Richard Rodgers, respectively. This could be the McFly's second time capitalizing on a post-torn-ACL target vacuum, though Janis is even rawer than WR Devin Funchess by all accounts. Also, potentially seeing better quality throws... but I digress.

Erstwhile, Reggie Wayne left Phoenix without a deal, only to be snapped up by Savannah with some new prospects. Look for Pierre Thomas to do the same thing, as the Uprising lead the league in poorly thought out moves, with six in seven days.

Rookies & Rebounds

We're going to take a look at a specific sort of unproven X-Factor for the upcoming season; Players who are either entering their first season of play, or players who missed substantial playtime in 2014- earmarked at less than ten games played last year, whether due to injury or inexperience. These are some of the guys that gutsy managers are prognosticating for big gains- likewise, they're the sort of wagers that can undermine an entire season if they go wrong.

Typically the longer the list, the higher the risk and reward- by this metric (obviously, devoid of important context like... how talented the player is, what position they play, or what injury they are returning from) the team taking the most chances is Deputy, with ten players who did not have a full season of production last year. The team with the 'safest' draft was Toronto, with Danny Woodhead the only member of the team without a full resume last year. Four other teams have only two 'Rookies & Rebounds' currently listed on their roster- including the three teams that finished in the cellar in 2014: Oakwood, HCM City, and Saskatoon.

South Park
and Liberal are both employing four rookies, the most in the league during training camp; Savannah joins Toronto as the only teams to not currently have a rookie on their active roster. The question with rookies is often about how the unknown tantalizes: will managers know when to be patient, and when to cut bait? We'll see as the pre-season unfolds and week one kicks off.

New York's  Todd Gurley has the distinction of both being a rookie, and rebounding from a torn ACL.

All About the Benjamin

In the eighty-four hours since the draft concluded, we have already seen twenty one roster moves!

Most of this tweaking has been back end of the bench rummaging for upside, or turnover at defensive positions where there's not yet an established margin between the last tier of starters and the cream of the crop on the wire.

But there has been one move that will definitely have long term ramifications:

The Deputy Van Halens lost third round pick WR Kelvin Benjamin to a torn ACL. He is out for the season. Just eighty-four hours ago Deputy planned to team him with Demaryius Thomas for a dynamic one-two punch. Now it's back to the drawing board: fellow sophomore Sammy Watkins moves up a slot- after that, Eddie Royal and Leonard Hankerson round out the corps. And nobody will mistake either of them for Kelvin Benjamin.

The Islanders dropped rookie Devin Funchess after the draft, and Hill Valley tactfully scooped him up in the immediate aftermath of the injury. He's in the same mold as Benjamin, though by most accounts less polished than Kelvin was at the same point last year- and nursing a sore hamstring to boot. Phoenix picked up veteran WR Reggie Wayne, anticipating that he might be brought in to see some targets. The rest of the Panther's WR corps offers limited upside, languishing in Larkspur Bowl purgatory.
