WEEK ELEVEN: Recap

We're through the byes, and now with two weeks left before the playoffs, we see two teams at the top, five teams fighting for four spots, and another two teams with a sliver of hope remaining. Five teams have seen their playoff chances dwindle to zero, and now will work to compete in the consolation bracket, to determine the first six picks in the 2016 draft.

Week 11 Matchups

TIERED REVIEW:

Contenders
1. New York's Finest (10-1)
takes the overall points lead and has clinched a playoff bye.
2. Phoenix Uprising (9-2)
gets the W pending stat corrections; If it stands, they have secured a bye.

In the Hunt
3. Pawnee Pride (6-5)
have positioning, but faceoff with a Phoenix team that should be at full power.
4. Saskatoon Sasquatch (6-5)
are on a tear, but has two quality opponents left on the docket: SPC & ISL
5. Revis Islanders (6-5)
cannot afford to back their way in anymore, after dropping two in a row, 3 of 5.
6. Toronto LTP (6-5)
the cupboard is bare at RB- this week's claim will be pressed into duty.
7. Hill Valley McFlys (6-5)
Win out and they're in. Win less than that and the outlook is murky.

Not Dead Yet
8. South Park Cows (5-6)
Two huge weeks (and wins) could get them in on total points.
9. Manitoba Moosecrew (5-6)
Broke the Cows heart in week 11 and held on to the slimmest chances for a berth.

Looking Ahead
10. HCM City Lead Farmers (4-7)
Heartbreaker ends hopes for a winning season after 0-5 start, but this ain't a bad team.
11. Deputy Van Halens (4-7)
Made moves to make noise in playoffs they won't make. Gunning for top pick?
12. Liberal HT (4-7)
Any minute change in tweek 11's scoring could give the team the tiniest spark of life.

Cellar Dwellers
13. Oakwood Drivers (3-8)
Six losses in a row amid some truly terrible luck. Just trying to end the skid now.
14. Savannah Petes (3-8)
Played spoiler to the Islanders, and finally got back in the win column, albeit far too late.

OPotW: RB Doug Martin, Pawnee Pride (37.3pts)
Don't call him Muscle Hamster. Doug Martin's resurgence echoed his initial breakthrough, as the unstoppable Dougernaut rushed for 235 yards on 27 carries. Seven first downs and two big runs over forty yards had the Pride setting the pace in this one, and with platoonmate Mark Ingram back from bye, Pawnee's run will have as much to do with the runners as their elite group of receivers.

DPotW: LBs D'Qwell Jackson & Lavonte David,
Saskatoon (32.8 & 32.2pts)
The Sasquatch won this week because their two elite linebackers both put up their best game of the season at the same time, just taking away the entire middle of the field for Deputy. Six solo tackles apiece, a sack and two TFLs for Jackson took away the run; Two batted passes David and another for Jackson, two interceptions for David and another for Jackson took away the pass, and both players reaching the end zone for a defensive touchdown was the difference. Without either one of them, the Van Halens get the win. With both of them, Saskatoon didn't give them a chance.

PUotW: LB Paul Worrilow, Toronto LTP (17.55pts)
Toronto's tenth round pick has come full circle- dropped after just over a month, Phoenix snatched the every down player up, before moving him to New York a few weeks later, in return for Stevie Johnson. Out of the rotation with the Finest, he had an opportunity to return home, and did so with avengeance; he picked a ball off and recovered a fumble, batted another pass, and made six combined tackles. It was a huge game, and it's unlikely he swaps jerseys again this year.

Week Ten Power Rankings

We're through ten weeks- double digit results. Everyone has won some, everyone has lost some, and we're able to track trends and see how teams got to their place in the standings. Efficiency, injury, and a little bit of luck either way have had a lot to do with teams from top to bottom.

1. (02) Phoenix Uprising  8-2-0 2060.49 1689.40 W-1
The Uprising's trademarked carousel of doom has been in full swing this season, as the team has used eleven running backs to date and managed to trade off a whopping seven RBs (Deangelo Williams, Frank Gore, David Johnson, Isaiah Crowell, Darren McFadden, Jonathan Stewart, and Jeremy Langford) throughout the season. Of course, they could have used any one of them in week ten, but they'll use Dev Freeman, Lamar Miller, and perhaps Eddie Lacy down the stretch. It remains to be seen how shuffling all that depth pays off in the playoffs. Both of the teams' losses are with multiple vacancies in their lineup. With byes coming to an end, a two game lead on the field, a head to head matchup with 9-1 New York in week thirteen, and a slim lead in overall points, Phoenix can control its own destiny.

2. (01) New York's Finest 9-1-0 2035.94 1614.87 L-1
New York's streak finally snaps by the slimmest of margins, but this is a team primed for a title defense. Their playoff spot clinched, their vaunted WR depth has been thinned by injuries, but still remains well above average. Likewise, Matt Forte's uncertain prognosis leaves the team to potentially pair Frank Gore with wunderkind Todd Gurley... not bad. With an excellent week to week defense, the team's mojo might come down to Aaron Rodgers getting his groove back. He's been excellent in terms of points in all but one contest, but the offense has not been the well oiled machine we're used to seeing him operate.

3. (05) Pawnee Pride 5-5-0 1882.07 1861.81 L-2
You look at the Pride's draft results, and you see a core of five players that have delivered or exceeded expectations: Odell Beckham, Mike Evans, Emmanuel Sanders, Mark Ingram, Doug Martin. Adding AJ Green and Gary Barnidge to the equation gives them a juggernaut of a lineup, probably the best six starters in the league down the stretch. Quarterback has been a revolving door, but that comes down to managerial prowess: If Pawnee makes the right call under center week after week, they are a playoff team, and one that can make some serious noise. A dud at signal caller, especially in the playoffs, could bring it all toppling down. Still; Nobody wants to face the pride in the final six weeks.

4. (06) South Park Cows  5-5-0 1860.30 1928.92 W-1
After leading the league for the bulk of 2014, 2015 has held more adversity for the Cows- but with three weeks left in the season, they're sitting in playoff position, and are ranked even better. They may have come into the year planning to play QB roulette again, but Carson Palmer made short work of that plan, grabbing the reins and dominating at every turn. Julio Jones, Jarvis Landry, and Brandin Cooks are a top quality trifecta, and even without a settled running back situation, South Park's mastery of the wire and defensive upside gives them the weapons to hang with anybody; the second hardest schedule hasn't buried them, and their final three games are against middling squads.

5. (03) Revis Islanders     6-4-0 1854.31 1831.99 L-1
The Islanders had a chance to break away from the pack last week and get to seven wins, but could not defeat the Lead Farmers. This is a potentially great team with Ben Roethlisberger under center; He's struggled through a variety of ailments, but continues to be a force whenever he can take the field. Bruising high upside RBs (Beast Mode, Blount, Ivory) are the hammer here; The WRs are something of an underwhelming bunch. Amari Cooper has had a great rookie season, but Randall Cobb has disappeared at times, and the rest of the crew are boom/bust parts, not weekly stalwarts. A good defense keeps them in most games, and if they hang around long enough, they can challenge for a second title.

6. (07) Saskatoon Sasquatch 5-5-0 1823.72 1902.99 W-2
The season has been frustrating for the Sasquatch, who are putting up respectable points- just not enough of them to win more than half the time. They'll have a chance to make things right down the stretch, with matchups against South Park and the Islanders. Beating them both would be a huge boon to their playoff chances. Antonio Brown is the motor for this team- he's surrounded by a host of competency, but he is the only week to week difference maker here. They'll need him to continue to see ridiculous volume against the other top teams to make the playoffs and progress.

7. (09) HCM LeadFarmers 4-6-0 1791.06 1875.62 W-2
The Farmers are on the cusp of legitimacy, under .500 but with the points to make some noise in tiebreak. They'll need to push their winning streak to five to have a chance; They have a great opportunity to do that against three of the bottom four teams in the league (in terms of total points) down the stretch. Nobody expected DeMarco Murray to repeat last year's numbers in this system, but the early returns were rough; Lately, he has been back to his dynamic workhorse role, and paired with Charcandrick West, there's a one-two punch. Allen Robinson has seized the role of premier receiver this year, with nary a dud since the season opener; Greg Olsen is a plus tight end, with the volume and the red zone numbers to be a matchup nightmare for all but a few teams. The rest of the offense isn't really going to scare anybody, but with some good breaks, should be enough to supplement.

8. (04) Les Tres Petites    6-4-0 1760.43 1802.95 W-2
Maybe Toronto is fortunate to be in the position they are, considering the mediocre point total. But they've seen a reasonable amount of points against them, so perhaps it is less luck, and more excellent scheme: They're not overpowering anybody, but they're finding the right players in the right matchup to get the job done. Picking Danny Woodhead in the 19th round was a genius move (the only other 19th rounder to match his top flight production is HCM's Andy Dalton) and holding on to Tom Brady, moving Drew Brees for James Jones, and retaining Calvin Johnson were all shrewd decisions to put this team in playoff position. Is it a deep squad? Not particularly. But that doesn't matter if they keep making quality moves to optimize the starting lineup.

9. (10) Manitoba MC      4-6-0 1749.50 1855.22 W-1
The Crew isn't in great position for a playoff spot, but they're not yet eliminated. Their lineup from top to bottom remains highly talented, with hall of fame caliber veterans at each position.Tony Romo returns this week, and if he can segue back into the offense quickly, he should buoy a team that features Adrian Peterson, Larry Fitzgerald, Brandon Marshall, Jimmy Graham, and Jason Witten. Having fringe add Danny Amendola's role blossom was great fortune- if they Cinderella this shit, he'll be a big reason why.

10. (13) Oakwood Drivers 3-7-0 1741.12 1756.87 L-5
The Drivers were 3-2 once upon a time, a surprise contender. That was five weeks ago, and all they have done since then is lose, lose, lose no matter what. When Le'veon Bell went down, they made a shrewd move, sending the fated Edelman to Deputy for reinforcements. But the downfall of their season has been none other than the legendary Peyton Manning, who has been mediocre at best all season long: 9 TDs and 17 picks? Yikes. Just goes to show the pitfalls of drafting older players is perhaps even more pronounced than youth: Nobody is going to drop Peyton Manning, even when they ought to. Not until it is too late.

11. (08) Hill Valley McFlys 5-5-0 1686.63 1700.78 L-1
The McFlys have been hanging on to relevancy, despite the deck seemingly stacked against them. Injuries and ineffectiveness have the McFlys pinned at .500, and their paltry overall numbers will require them to win out to return to the playoffs after missing them for the first time in 2014. Cam Newton has been doing his part- it's up to the upper echelon talents int he WR corps: DT, Alshon, and Watkins, to game break if the team is going to go on a run here. Did I say run? Don't say run. This team's running back situation is a mess, though it's not really their fault. Jamaal Charles sitting on IR could have been the death knell, but they've soldiered on. To where? Parts unknown.

12. (11) Deputy Van Halens 4-6-0 1647.02 1768.47 L-1
Deputy made some big moves in an attempt to salvage their season, but with the loss of Julian Edelman, their thin playoff hopes teeter on the edge of oblivion; Their depleted roster has been hassled by the promise of Austin Seferian-Jenkins, who put up a monster week one before being injured in week two and has yet to be cleared for contact. Edelman and Benjamin both cost a lot, for very little payoff. The team's best hope might be to ride their trio of competent running backs and Phil Rivers through the consolation bowl, and secure a quality draft slot.

13. (12) Liberal HT          4-6-0 1627.34 1569.58 W-1
The Head Trauma came into the season with a highly regarded RB squadron: Eddie Lacy, who has been much maligned; Lamar Miller who squeaked through the first month of the season and was traded, before a coaching change gave him new life; Arian Foster, a steal in the ninth round, who overcame injury to produce huge numbers before being felled by another injury; and CJ Spiller who was supposed to be the perfect fit for a new offense but uh, hasn't been. The team actively churned its roster, and has producers Jonathan Stewart and James Starks complimenting sudden superstar Stefon Diggs, a cool hand Drew Brees, and rumbling Travis Kelce, but the early season woes have them almost out of the race, and their overall points do them no favors in tie breakers. They've seen remarkably few points against, but have been unable to cash in on weak opponents.

14. (14) Savannah Petes   2-8-0 1579.83 1940.29 L-5
Nothing went right for Savannah this year, and to top it all off, they've had the toughest run of opponents to date, everybody beating up on the Petes. Just go down their draft board and see the misery: Andrew Luck - Injured weeks 4, 5, 10 and on. Dez Bryant - Injured weeks 2-7 and traded. Deandre Hokpins... fucking awesome, but this is a tiny shining isle in a sea of despair. Luke Kuechly - Injured weeks 2-5 and traded. DeAndre Levy - Injured all year, tried coming back once and was immediately injured. Curtis Lofton - Just not a good pick at all. Stevie Johnson - Injured weeks 5 & 6 and traded. Shane Vereen - Inconsistent production. Carlos Hyde - Monster Week 1 followed by meh and traded. Julius Thomas - Injured weeks 1-4 and traded. Jadeveon Clowney - Ineffective, erroneous positioning, injured week 6 and dropped. Eric Weddle - Fine! The only other draft pick left on this team is kicker Josh Brown, who has been a really good kicker. So, yes, there are four draft picks left on the roster, and one is an injured QB and one is a kicker.

WEEK TEN: Recap

For the moment, it appears the mighty have finally fallen- or at least, been staggered. New York's Finest was down a point to the Mighty Sasquatch before Tuesday morning adjustments increased that margin to nearly five. If Thursday's final adjustments maintain the difference, the defending champions' undefeated season is no more.

We'll examine each team in depth this week with some POWER RANKINGS!

Week 10 Matchups

Lightning Round:
Phoenix (8-2) has their lowest output of the season but still crushes Hill Valley (5-5) who scored the least of any team, any week, this season.

HCM City (4-6) ain't dead yet, stomping out the Islanders (6-4) and herding them back to the pack: 6 teams are now separated by 1 game, fighting for 4 spots over 3 weeks.

Toronto (6-4) wins again and is showing they're no pushover, cementing their lead over Pawnee (5-5) and controlling their own destiny.

Saskatoon (5-5) upsets New York (9-1) and can get their head above water for the first time in two months with another win.

The Moose Call (4-6) is faint, but discernible after crushing Deputy (4-6) who needed a win badly. Both teams will try to win out and hope for a miracle.

South Park (5-5) is taking care of business in crunch time. The lost season for the (2-8) Savannah Petes continues.

Liberal (4-6) finally gets a good bounce, and keeps the (3-7) Drivers' five game slide going downhill.

OPotW: RB Jeremy Langford, South Park (39.8pts)
In the final deal of the year, and the Cows' first deal in history, the team's acquisition paid immediate dividends, leading the league in scoring in week ten, beating out Adrian Peterson by a step. Langford had 182 total yards in his South Park debut, on twenty carries and seven catches. He scored a TD of both varieties, moved the chains seven times, and busted off an 83 yard game breaker. As long as Langford is touching the ball, he figures to be a game changing asset down the stretch.

DPotW: LB Bobby Wagner, Phoenix (21.6pts)
When Phoenix traded Langford there were some skeptics, and when Langford took home OPotW there was some doubt, and when the Uprising played RB Christine Michael in the spot Langford would have been perfect for, and he managed just over one point, there was a backlash. So Bobby Wagner, the get for Langford, responded by leading rostered IDPs in points this week. (Full disclosure, upon stat corrections, Uprising teammate Reshad Jones' 21.85 pts technically deserved DPotW honors, but this is a better story.) 11 total tackles, a batted ball, and a loose ball taken 22 yards to the house salvaged first impressions, but it will be what happens in the next six weeks that determines who won the trade.

PUotW: QB Kirk Cousins, Saskatoon (29.46pts)
The Sasquatch had a seemingly insurmountable task at hand against the 9-0 defending champions, and were going to have to do it without long time franchise Quarterback Matt Ryan. Problem? Nope. Kirk Cousins came in and played to annihilate, throwing for a line of 20-25, 324 yards, and four touchdowns. Peyton Manning he is not- and that's a good thing these days. With the deadline past, and Ryan set to return from bye, Cousins may not be long for the Sasquatch, but he'll be a folk hero forever in the great white north.

THE TRADE DEADLINE

It is currently 10:59pm eastern time, which means there are exactly four hours left before trading concludes.

We've seen two deals go down in the final days before rosters settle:

TRADE 19:

PHOENIX ACQUIRES:
CB Patrick Peterson

MANITOBA ACQUIRES:
LB Danny Trevathan

On Wednesday the Uprising's LB depth swelled to five, while they had zero cornerbacks on the roster. Moving one of their linebackers for a CB was an obvious move. Patrick Peterson has not been the playmaker he was in 2012 when he picked of 7 passes and defended 17 more, nor the returner he was in 2011, when he took four punts back to the house. Once you cement yourself as a quality cover corner, you get tested less often, and less opportunities to tick the stat sheet. Still, Peterson retains the skills to make a play at any moment, and thus, week to week, is as capable of a lightning strike as anyone else at the position.

Trevathan is coming off an unreal 19 total tackles (13 assists) and has returned to an every down role in a monster defense. He was a titan in the middle in 2013, before missing most of 2014 due to injury- if he has come all the way back to form, he's a top 15 option at the position, a safe source of tackles and a spark plug for big plays.

TRADE 20:

SOUTH PARK ACQUIRES:
RB Jeremy Langford

LB Kevin Minter

PHOENIX ACQUIRES:
LB Bobby Wagner

South Park finally made their first trade in franchise history, addressing their depleted running back depth by nabbing upstart Langford off a 26 point debut for Phoenix. He immediately slots in as a starter, although his bell cow role is uncertain to last. Short term he addresses a need for a team in the thick of the playoff race, and they may only take a marginal downgrade at linebacker, where third year MLB Kevin Minter has begun to blossom as an every down player. Minter has yet to make any plays in coverage, but his eight tackles for a loss (among 47 total takedowns) show a propensity to put his nose on the ball against the run, making him a steady presence.

Wagner is among the best MLBs in the game but his stats have been somewhat laggard across the board in 2015. Phoenix defended the move thusly:
Trade deadline is tomorrow- Langford has minimal value for me after this week, and I feel like Wagner is a more than marginal upgrade over Minter. It also gives me a roster spot to complete my roster without having to drop anyone. Langford was only likely to start one more week for me- even if he retains some value, Forte's eventual return would keep me from wanting to start him. Only way I regret this deal is if Forte never returns.
The Uprising proceeded to add CB Richard Sherman, to bring their roster full again. The Uprising are 7-2 on the season, but are 5-0 with a full roster, 2-0 with one empty slot, 0-1 with two empty slots, and 0-1 with three empty slots.

WEEK NINE: Recap

Pushing their unbeaten streak to fourteen in a row, New York's Finest (9-0) have already clinched a playoff spot, and continue to dominate the league. Two games back is Phoenix (7-2), and three games back are the Islanders (6-3), which means the 2014, 2013, and 2012 champs are in succession at the top of the pack. Behind them: A three pack of five win teams, a three pack of four win teams, and four teams that are probably just jockeying for draft position next year.

Week 9 Matchups

HCM City (3-6) flat out coached the Uprising (7-2) who looked to be in cruise control. Phoenix played down three roster spots, got nothing from another, and benched a superlative running back in favor of an untested rookie- all reasons for their demise. The Lead Farmers made four last minute roster changes, each of which ultimately contributed to their victory. Yes, without any of them, even the 3.5 points Byron Maxwell scored, HCM loses this game.

Saskatoon (4-5) took care of business. Mostly, OPotW Antonio Brown took care of business, scoring 50.8 points and really giving Pawnee (5-4) no chance. Yes, that is the season high for points scored by a single player in a single week. No, I don't think he's being traded anytime soon- The Sasquatch are still primed for a playoff run, after two years in the cellar. The Pride will need to shrug off the loss and get back at it against Toronto this week, as they jockey to stay in the top six.

New York (9-0) is just really in a league of their own right now, just silly good. They go into week ten without a sure thing at RB2 (Gore on bye, Forte on crutches) but Todd Gurley has been such a monster, it might not matter. Michael Crabtree is the team's best WR now, and that might not matter either. There is no obvious achilles here. Manitoba (3-6) never had a chance in this one, and even if they win out, is likely looking at a berth in the consolation bracket.

Hill Valley (5-4) has fought and gashed their way into playoff position, and their monster performance in week nine has the trumpet them as contenders. Even with unsettled running back situation, this is a squad of WRs that could go toe to toe with Pawnee as potentially the best in the league. They'll get a chance to prove they belong against Phoenix in Week ten. Oakwood (3-6) gave a valiant effort, but with the loss their playoff hopes are dangling by a string. DPotW Antwon Blake has been a difference maker in six of nine games this season, and along with Hill Valley's Josh Norman, is a top CB in this league.

Deputy (4-5) showed why patience is a virtue on the waiver wire, as top claim Deangelo Williams made good on his potential as the PUotW. The Van Halens have new life and could push for a playoff spot with a quality final month of the season. Flipside, Savannah (2-7) are the first team to be mathematically eliminated from playoff contention. They'll need to fight to make the consolation bracket and have a chance at a top draft pick, and it appears they'll have to do it without their current top draft pick, Andrew Luck.Just a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad year for the Petes.

The Islanders (6-3) are quietly a top three team in the league, handily disposing of a dangerous South Park (4-5) squad to secure their position. However, they're in need of QB help once again, as Big Ben suffered another injury, just as he was getting back in his groove. South Park started waiver claim Vernon Davis who did nothing, while Richard Rodgers sat on the bench, a rare misstep for one of the shrewdest movers and shakers in the league. They remain in striking distance at seventh.

Toronto (5-4) might as well be called the Woodheads: Since the beginning, they have believed in Danny "Les Tres Petites" Woodhead, and he has delivered time and time again: Here, his 22.5 points clinched the victory in the final two minutes. Liberal (3-6) should have their best month in the last month, but they're not making the playoffs in 2015. If they can get out of the bottom two, they can make some noise in the consolation bracket, where the clinched the second pick last year.

DPotW: CB Antwon Blake, Oakwood Drivers (20pts)
Blake is not a huge name, but he's been a huge force all season. In Oakwood's loss to Hill Valley, he was all over the field, making nine total tackles, one for a loss, defending two passes, and forcing a fumble. On the season, this guys has linebacker tackle numbers: 49 solo, ten assists, and three backfield stuffs. Nine swats, two picks, 112 return yards, and a TD make him an impact player, and one of the rare cornerbacks that can make a difference almost every Sunday.

OPotW: WR Antonio Brown, Saskatoon Sasquatch (50.8pts)
Antonio Brown inhabited this space in week two, when he put up bonkers numbers:
...nine catches for over two fields worth of total yardage, seven first downs, a touchdown, and a two point conversion would be a good month for a WR3. Brown continues to show why he is the top WR in the game.

Well those numbers look downright mundane compared to what he did this week. SEVENTEEN CATCHES. TWO HUNDRED AND EIGHTY FOUR TOTAL YARDS. THREE PLAYS OVER 40 YARDS. NINE FIRST DOWNS. He didn't score and he lost a fumble, and he still had the best day of any player in our league this season. Frightening.

PUotW: RB DeAngelo Williams, Deputy Van Halens (45.2pts)
Often this award goes to a stealth pickup who delivered in a huge spot. Not this week. Number one claim Deangelo Williams did all that was advertised and more in his return to feature backdom. Twenty nine touches for 235 total yards, two touchdowns, a two point conversion, he's reshaped the Van Halen's entire roster, and gives them as potent a roster as any, if he can keep his 32 year old body healthy.
